On the Salt
When to photograph the Salt Flats
Mirror season (typically late winter into spring): a thin layer of standing water can turn the flats into a giant reflecting pool — the famous sky-meets-ground look. Conditions change year to year, so we watch them closely before every session.
Dry season (typically summer into fall): the crust hardens into bright white salt with its signature hexagonal patterns — ideal for crisp, minimal portraits.
Year-round, we schedule around sunrise and sunset. Midday light on white salt is harsh; golden hour is soft, warm, and glowing.
Planning your session
The Bonneville Salt Flats sit about two hours west of Salt Lake City along I-80, near Wendover. The area is public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. We guide you on where to meet, what to wear (soft tones and flowing fabric photograph beautifully against the white), and what to bring — layers, water, sunglasses, and shoes you don't mind getting salty. We never drive onto wet salt and we follow Leave No Trace on every visit.

For the mirror-like reflection, late winter into spring is typically best, when a thin layer of water can sit on the salt. For bright white salt and crisp hexagonal patterns, summer into fall is typically best. Conditions vary each year, so we check them before every session.
