Michael was based in California, and planned a multi-stage surprise for his soon-to-be fiancé Dora. Not only would he be proposing, but he was surprising her by having her entire family also fly out to Utah. Michael wanted a secluded spot, so I gave him one of my favorite photo locations near Park City. He scouted early that morning to find a tiny side trail, and we set the time. I crouched in the bushes, guerilla-style, waiting for them to walk down the path. As they approached, I started photographing, and Michael turned to her, got down on one knee, and executed a perfect surprise proposal. Without Michael able to see the area ahead of time and planning everything over phone calls and text messages, I knew we had to pull it off flawlessly. After the proposal, we said our goodbyes, only that was just half of the surprise; as I secretly headed to the rented home in Deer Valley to meet the rest of their family, waiting for the happy couple to return. Once they arrived, she was again surprised by her parents and siblings, and we were able to capture more group family photos.
Jake and Lauren travel annually to Utah to visit Lauren’s family, so this time Jake decided to make it extra special with a surprise proposal. He had most of it planned; I would wait for them at the top of the scenic chairlift at Park City Mountain Resort, where I found the resort’s wedding ceremony site. Jake also wanted video of the moment, so I brought an extra camera to set up and record the entire event. The summer day started off with a thunderstorm that caused the resort to close the Alpine Slide, the only way to descend from the scenic chairlift. With lunch reservations also looming, Lauren was apprehensive about taking the scenic ride, which would have ruined the entire plan. Thankfully after a little waiting, the Alpine Slide opened and the couple hopped on the chairlift. I stayed in constant contact with Jake through WhatsApp, so I had a heads-up that they were approaching. I crouched low in the bushes along side a maintenance shed, and as they passed by me on the walking path, I quietly emerged to photograph the surprise proposal, which ended up being a complete surprise to Lauren. She ecstatically said yes, and we celebrated the beautiful moment with some impromptu engagement photos among the aspen trees and wildflowers.
Michael had the perfect plan for his surprise proposal to the love of his life, Brooke. He was going to surprise her on a December evening at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City. The fake “event” was a work dinner, so they were both dressed up. Michael worked with the hotel to have a special room set up with flowers and candles. Upon arriving, I realized hiding in the room would instantly give away my position, so I found a spot out in the public area of the hotel to wait where I would not be so quickly noticed. The moment she walked in to the private room, Brooke knew something was up. Yet it did not reduce any amount of emotion that was about to come, as Michael took her hand, got down on one knee, and asked her to be his wife. The surprise proposal was perfect, they popped champagne and toasted the moment. We spent some time exploring the hotel and taking engagement photos, and we slowly made our way to his second surprise, a larger room was reserved for dinner and their friends and family all waited secretly for their arrival. This additional surprise brought Brooke to tears, and the secret surprise proposal turned into the most meaningful social event.
