Summer (June through August): This is the season for bone-dry ground, warm sun, and those iconic geometric salt crust patterns stretching to the horizon. Summer days are very hot, but late evening sessions bring gorgeous golden light and comfortable breezes.
Winter and Spring (December through May): Snowmelt and rain pool across the impermeable salt basin, turning the flats into a giant, glass-like reflective mirror. Standing on top of the sky reflection is pure magic, though it comes with cold water and chilly winds. Early sunrise sessions during these months offer dead-calm water conditions before winds pick up.
Fall (September through November): Autumn brings mild temperatures, quiet surroundings, and stable ground. Late fall often gifts us shallow reflective pools without the freezing temperatures of winter, making it a sweet spot for portrait sessions.
Heading out to the salt flats is a true desert adventure, so going in with realistic expectations makes the trip smooth and fun.
The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way from Salt Lake City (roughly 110 miles west along I-80). When you factor in travel, setting up, changing outfits, and shooting through the twilight glow, plan on setting aside about 4 to 5 hours for your session. We always schedule our start time about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. Sunset happens roughly 30 minutes later out here than it does in the SLC valley. Stick around after the sun dips below the horizon—blue hour brings dramatic pink, lavender, and soft blue tones across the whole sky.
Summer afternoons can bring quick-moving pop-up thunderstorms and gusty winds, so keeping an eye on the weather forecast is crucial. Most importantly, protect your vehicle. Never drive off paved areas onto soft, damp, or flooded salt. Vehicles sink into underlying mud fast, leading to costly off-road towing fees. Stick to designated parking areas and walk out onto the salt. Once you return home, give your vehicle a thorough undercarriage car wash to rinse away corrosive salt dust.
Getting to the salt flats from Salt Lake City is a straightforward drive straight west, but knowing where to park makes all the difference.
Drive West on I-80: Take Interstate 80 West out of Salt Lake City and drive west for approximately 110 miles across the desert.
Take Exit 4: Watch for Exit 4 marked for Bonneville Speedway (after you pass the big rest area).
Follow Speedway Road: At the end of the off-ramp, turn right onto North Bonneville Speedway Road. Continue north along the paved frontage road for about 4 miles.
Park at the Road’s End: The paved road ends directly at a large turnabout cul-de-sac right at the edge of the salt flats. You can park safely on the pavement here and walk straight out onto the salt pan (if it’s summer, you’ll be able to drive right out onto the salt!).
