There is something incredibly special about a “homecoming” proposal. When Ethan first reached out to us at Poppy & Hive Photography, he was stationed in Germany while his girlfriend, Lauren, was back in Ohio. With both of them traveling to Utah to visit family for the holidays, Ethan knew this was the moment to ask the biggest question of his life.
As a surprise proposal photographer in Utah, my job starts long before I ever click the shutter. For Ethan and Lauren’s session, we coordinated primarily through WhatsApp and Google Maps. Because Ethan was planning this from another continent, he needed a local expert to be his eyes on the ground. We spent time scouting the perfect, secluded spot along the shore of Pineview Reservoir near Eden, exchanging screenshots and pinpointing the exact GPS coordinates where he should drop to one knee.

When they arrived at the water’s edge, the hard rain held off just long enough for the magic to happen. Seeing Ethan drop to one knee against the backdrop of the Wasatch mountains was breathtaking. After she said “Yes!” (through plenty of happy tears!), we transitioned into their first official engagement photos. Even with the drizzle starting back up, Lauren couldn’t stop smiling. She spent the rest of the session cuddling into Ethan to stay warm, which made for the most genuine, romantic lifestyle photography.
